SEEING THe light

PROJECT OVERVIEW

I created this series of images using a photography technique called light painting. The goal was to capture unique, abstract visuals directly in-camera, using light as a brush to draw shapes and illuminate the scene in creative ways.

The Process

  • Long Exposure Setup: I set my camera on a tripod and adjusted the shutter speed to stay open for several seconds (or minutes).

  • Drawing with Light: While the camera was recording, I moved various light sources—such as LED tubes, flashlights, or glow sticks—through the frame to create patterns.

  • In-Camera Effects: Everything you see was captured in the moment. There is no digital overlay or Photoshop trickery; the shapes are the result of physical movement and timing.

What is Light Painting?

Light painting is a technique where a camera's shutter is left open for a long period (long exposure) in a dark environment. Because the shutter is open, the camera records any movement of light as a continuous streak. This allows the photographer to physically "draw" in the air or selectively light up specific parts of a subject while the rest of the scene remains dark.

Skills Used

Long Exposure Photography Understanding shutter speed, ISO, and aperture to capture light in the dark without overexposing the image.

Creative Lighting Using handheld lights to control exactly where the viewer looks and how the subject is revealed.

Composition Planning the movement of the light to ensure the final "drawing" fits perfectly within the frame.
